To a cooled (0° C.) mixture of 46.2 g of 3-fluorobenzenethanol, 40 ml of N,N-diethylethanamine and 500 ml of dichloromethane, there were added dropwise 41.2 g of methanesulfonyl chloride, keeping the temperature below 5° C. After stirring for 18 hours at room temperature, the reaction mixture was diluted with water and extracted with dichloromethane. The extract was dried, filtered and evaporated, yielding 81 g (100%) of 2-(3-fluorophenyl)ethanol methanesulfonate (ester) (interm. 34).
