Procedure
A mixture of 4-[2-ethyl-7-(2,4,6-trimethyl-phenyl)-6,7-dihydro-5H-imidazo[1,2-a]imidazol-3-yl]-heptan-4-ol (0.0444 g, 0.000120 mol) and p-toluenesulfonic acid-H2O (15 mole %) in toluene (3 mL) was heated at reflux for 1 h. Upon cooling to room temperature, the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure, and the residue was partitioned between ether and saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate. The organic phase was washed with brine, dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, and concentrated to give the desired product in quantitative yield. LC-MS indicated the presence of two regioisomers in an approximate ratio of 2:1.
