In an atmosphere of oxygen, the mixture of 10 mmole of 1-carboxy-3-nitroadamantane, 1 mmole of NHPI, 0.05 mmole of V(AA)3 and 25 mL of acetic acid was allowed to react for 4 hours at 85° C. The reaction products were analyzed by gas-mass spectroscopy, and as a result, 1-carboxy-3-nitro-5-adamantanol was formed in a 80% yield.
