To a solution of methyl 4-bromomethylbenzoate (22.8 g) in N,N-dimethylformamide (450 ml) is added dropwise 50% aqueous dimethylamine solution (27 mL) and the mixture is stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. The reaction mixture is poured into water with ice and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract is washed successively with water and saturated brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and concentrated in vacuo. The resultant crude product is purified by flash column chromatography on silica gel (Solvent; chloroform:methanol=10:1) to give methyl 4-[(dimethylamino) methyl]benzoate (27.5 g, yield; 99%) as brown oil.
