1H-Indazole-5-carbonitrile (5.3 g, 36.8 mmol) was dissolved in methanol (60 mL) and aqueous sodium hydroxide (30 mL). Bromine (7.07 g, 44.4 mmol) in solution in 2.0 N aqueous sodium hydroxide (30 mL) was added with a disposable pipet. The reaction mixture was then heated to 40° C. for 1.5 hours. The reaction was cooled to room temperature and acidified with 6.0 N aqueous hydrochloric acid. The resulting solid was collected by filtration and washed 3 times with 20-mL portions of water. The solid was dried under vacuum for 1 day. The solid was used without further purification. (7.54 g, 92% yield): 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 13.3 (br s, 1H), 8.0 (s, 1H), 7.5 (s, 2H); ES-MS (m/z) 224 [M+1]+.
