A solution of 0.67 mL of 3M MeMgBr in ether (2.0 mmol) was added to a stirring 0° C. solution of 200 mg of 1-methyl-5-trimethylsilanylethynyl-1H-imidazole-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (0.80 mmol) in 5 mL of THF over 15 min. The mixture was allowed to warm to rt and stirred overnight. Water (20 mL) was added and the mixture was extracted with EtOAc (3×100 mL). The combined extracts were washed with brine and dried with MgSO4, filtered, concentrated and chromatographed (10–100 EtOAc in hexanes) to give 2-(1-methyl-5-trimethylsilanylethynyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)-propan-2-ol as a yellow oil (110 mg).
