0.31 ml hydrazine hydrate (99%), dissolved in 1 ml of ethanol, is added dropwise at ambient temperature to a solution of 1.80 g of methyl 2-bromo-3-(2-butyn-1-yl)-5-formyl-3H-imidazol-4-carboxylate in 25 ml of ethanol. Five minutes later 1.5 ml of concentrated acetic acid are added and the mixture is refluxed for 30 minutes. After cooling the solid precipitated is suction filtered, washed with 10 ml of ethanol and 20 ml of diethyl ether and dried.
