Procedure

2-Bromo-4-[(E)-2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)vinyl]-1-(phenylsulfonyl)benzene (Example 55, 130 mg, 0.3 mmol) and copper(I) cyanide (40 mg, 0.45 mmol) were combined in N,N-dimethylformamide (20 mL) and heated to 130° C. for 3 hours. Further copper(I) cyanide (40 mg, 0.45 mmol) was added and heating continued overnight. The cooled reaction mixture was diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with water (×3) and brine, dried over MgSO4 and evaporated in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash column chromatography on silica, eluting with 20–30% ethyl acetate/isohexane, followed by trituration with diethyl ether to give the title compound (50 mg, 44%). δH (360 MHz, d6 DMSO): 8.41 (1H, d, J=1.6 Hz), 8.28 (1H, d, J=8.4 Hz), 8.14 (1H, dd, J=1.7, 8.4 Hz), 8.01–7.98 (2H, m), 7.86–7.64 (4H, m), 7.58 (1H, d, J=16.6 Hz), 7.37 (1H, d, J=16.8 Hz), 7.32–7.28 (1H, m), 7.17 (1H, td, J=2.4, 8.5 Hz).
