A mixture of 4-chloro-5-carboxy-6-methoxy-2-methylthiopyrimidine (prepared in the above (3)) 2.00 g and thionyl chloride 5 ml is stirred at 40° C. for 15 minutes. Thionyl chloride, etc. is distilled off and the solvent is removed with azeotrope with methylene chloride to give 4-chloro-5-chloroformyl-6-methoxy-2-methylthiopyrimidine.
