A mixture of 2-[4-hydroxy-1-[4-(methylsulfonyl)phenyl]-4-(trifluoromethyl)-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-2-yl]pyridine from step 2 (1.0 g, 2.6 mmol) and p-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate (0.2 g, 2.7 mmol) in toluene (100 ml) was heated to reflux for 24 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled and the solvent removed under reduced pressure. The crude mixture (1.2 g) was purified by chromatography on silica gel using ethyl acetate/toluene (1/1) to give pure 2-[1-[4-(methylsulfonyl)phenyl]-4-trifluoromethyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl]pyridine (620 mg, 65%) as a white solid: mp (DSC) 184° C. Anal. Calc'd. for C16H12N3SO2F3: C, 52.30; H, 3.29; N, 11.44. Found: C, 52.23; H, 3.23; N, 11.19.
