This amide (900 mg, 3.4 mmol) was dissolved in dimethylformamide (100 ml) and potassium carbonate (516 mg) added, followed by iodomethane (0.6 ml, 3.7 mmol). The solution was stirred for 5 hours, then concentrated in vacuo. The residual oil was partitioned between ethyl acetate (50 ml) and H2O (50 ml), the aqueous layer extracted with ethyl acetate (3×50 ml), the combined organic phases washed with brine (20 ml), dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to yield 3-(2-methoxy-4-nitrophenyl)-1-pyrrolidin-1-yl-propan-1-one as a black oil (900 mg, 3.2 mmol);
