Procedure

Copper(I) cyanide (Aldrich, 3.6 g, 40 mmol) was added to a solution of 4-bromo-2-fluorotoluene (Aldrich, 5 g, 27 mmol) in DMF (60 ml). The reaction mixture was heated at 150° C. for 11 hours. After cooling to room temperature, the mixture was partitioned between water and EtOAc (500 ml each). The organic layer was dried (MgSO4), and solvent was removed under vacuum to give the title compound (2.08, 58%). 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 2.36 (s, 3H), 7.30 (m, 3H), 7.35 (d, 1H, J=8.1 Hz).
