Procedure

A suspension of methyl 3,5-dihydroxybenzoate (2.0 g, 11.9 mmol), K2CO3 (1.6 g, 11.9 mmol), and iodomethane (1.7 g, 11.9 mmol) in acetone (100 mL) was stirred at reflux. After stirring for three hours the mixture was partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried (MgSO4), filtered and concentrated. The residue was purified by column chromatography to yield the tile compound as a white solid (0.813 g, 4.4 mmol). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ7.16 (m, 1H), 7.12 (m, 1H), 6.61 (m, 1H), 5.04 (s, 1H), 3.91 (s, 3H) 3.82 (s, 3H).
