Potassium hydroxide (1.58 g, 28.2 mmol, 10 eq) is added to a solution of 2-phenylsulfanyl-thiazole-5-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (0.748 g, 2.82 mmol, 1 eq) in EtOH (15 mL) and water (10.5 mL). The reaction is stirred for 1.5 hours, diluted with water (30 mL) and EtOH (30 mL), and acidified by addition of 3 N HCl until a white precipitate forms. The precipitate is filtered and purified by recrystallization from water and EtOH to give the product as a white crystalline solid (0.307 g). MS (ESI) for C10H7NO2S2 m/z 235.9 (M−H)−.
