A suspension of 4-benzyloxy-3-nitro-benzoic acid (36 g, 132 mmol) in toluene (1000 mL) and dimethylformamide (3 mL) was treated with thionyl chloride (47 g, 28.7 mL, 395 mmol) and stirred at 90° C. for 18 hours. The volatiles were evaporated completely and the residue dried under high vacuum. 4-Benzyloxy-3-nitro-benzoyl chloride thus obtained (37.5 g, 97%) was used crude in the following reaction.
