Procedure
A solution of 2-chloro-3-cyanopyridine (2 g, 14.4 mmol), L-alanine ethyl ester hydrochloride (3.3 g, 21.6 mmol), sodium carbonate (5.9 g, 43 mmol) in pyridine (1.75 mL) and DMF (20 mL) was heated to 125° C. for 36 h. The reaction was quenched with water and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×15 mL). The product was purified using column chromatography (10% MeOH in CH2Cl2) to yield a pale yellow solid (720 mg, 23%): 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 8.26 (d, J=4.8 Hz, 1H), 7.69-7.67 (m, 1H), 6.67-6.64 (m, 1H), 4.77-4.74 (m, 1H), 4.23-4.19 (m, 2H), 1.54 (d, J=7.2 Hz, 3H), 1.30-1.26 (m, 3H).
