Procedure
To a suspension of K2CO3 (0.110 g, 0.798 mmol) in H2O (0.4 mL) and MeOH (2 mL) was added a solution of 4-methyl-1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid 12 (262 mg, 1.60 mmol) in MeOH (2 mL). The solution was stirred for 20 min and was then concentrated in vacuo to give potassium-4-methyl-1,4-dihydro-pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole-2-carboxylate 12a as a grey solid (294 mg, 91%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, (CD3)2SO) δ (ppm) 9.80 (s, 1H) 6.58 (d, J=2.8 Hz, 1H) 6.10 (s, 1H) 5.70 (dd, J=2.8, 0.8 Hz, 1H) 3.55-3.57 (m, 3H).
