6-Amino-5-chloro-2-(4-chloro-2-fluoro-3-methoxyphenyl)-pyrimidine-4-carboxylic acid methyl ester (156 mg, 0.45 mmol) was dissolved in 15 mL methanol and 1 mL of 2N sodium hydroxide (2 mmol) was added. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours and then acidified with a slight excess of 2N HCl. The resulting solution was concentrated under a nitrogen stream and several crops of crystals were collected during this process yielding 6-amino-5-chloro-2-(4-chloro-2-fluoro-3-methoxyphenyl)pyrimidine-4-carboxylic acid (100 mg, 66.7% yield): mp 172-173° C.: 1H NMR (DMSO-d6): δ 8.0 (br, 1H), 7.63 (dd, 1H), 7.43 (dd, 1H), 3.92 (s, 3H).
