Procedure

A mixture of 1-BOC-piperazine (387 mg), 2-chloro-N,N-dimethylacetamide (0.43 mL) and triethylamine (0.58 mL) in chloroform was stirred at room temperature. After stirring overnight the reaction mixture was diluted with dichloromethane, washed with brine, dried (MgSO4) and the solvent removed in vacuo to yield 4-dimethylcarbamoylmethyl-piperazine-1-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester (558 mg). Treatment of this compound with HCl in dichloromethane/methanol yielded N,N-dimethyl-2-piperazin-1-yl-acetamide, which was isolated as the hydrochloride salt.
