A mixture of methyl 4-allylpiperidine-4-carboxylate from Step A (5.30 g, 24.2 mmol), N-(benzyloxycarbonyloxy)succinimide (7.25 g, 29.1 mmol), and N,N-diisopropylethylamine (12.7 mL, 72.7 mmol) in CH3CN (61 mL) was stirred for 16 h. The solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue was partitioned between EtOAc (100 mL) and saturated NaHCO3 (100 mL). The organic layer was separated and the aqueous layer was further extracted with EtOAc (2×100 mL). The combined organic extracts were concentrated in vacuo to give a residue that was purified by silica gel chromatography, eluting with a gradient of hexane:EtOAc—100:0 to 40:60, to give the title compound. MS: m/z=318 (M+1).
