Intermediate 17-acetoxy-heptadecanol (220 mg, 0.7 mmol) and CBr4 (302 mg, 0.91 mmol) were dissolved in CH2Cl2 (2 ml) and a solution of Ph3P (238 mg, 0.91 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (1.5 ml) was added via cannula at 0° C. The reaction was stirred at 0° C. for 2 h and then quenched with MeOH (0.3 ml), stirred for additional 10 min at room temperature, diluted with EtOAc and washed with aqueous NaHCO3 solution. The organic extract was dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated. Silica gel chromatography in hexane-EtOAc (99:1, 95:5) provided 261 mg (99%) of 17-acetoxy-heptadecyl bromide (40).
