1-(6-Methoxynaphthalen-2-yl)-1-(1-trityl-1H-imidazol-4-yl)ethanol (2.20 g) was dissolved in 90% formic acid (15 ml), and the solution was stirred at room temperature for 15 h. To the solution was added 1 N-hydrochloric acid, and precipitate was filtered off. The filtrate was neutralized with potassium carbonate, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride, dried and concentrated. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluent, ethyl acetate:methanol=20:1 chloroform:methanol=10:1) to give the titled compound (1.05 g) as a colorless solid.
