A solution of ethyl[2-(N-formylamino)thiazol-4-yl]acetate (1 g, 0.0047 mol) in THF (10 mL) was stirred under argon at −78° C. and potassium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide (2.8 g, 0.014 mol) in THF (10 mL) was added. After stirring for 30 minutes, 2,4,6-triisopropylbenzenesulfonyl azide (3.6 g, 0.012 mol) was added as a solid in one portion. After 5 minutes, acetic acid (1.4 mL, 0.018 mol) was added and the mixture warmed to room temperature. The reaction mixture was then partitioned between ethyl acetate (100 mL) and water (100 mL), separated and the organic layer dried (MgSO4). Evaporation of the solvent and purification of the residue by silica gel chromotography afforded the azide (0.95 g, 80%).
