Procedure
A solution of 1,1′-carbonyldiimidazole (5 g, 31 mmol) in DCM (200 mL) was treated with a solution of 1-[4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazinyl]-1-ethanone (from step (i) above; 5 g, 29 mmol) in DCM (50 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at rt overnight before water was added. The layers were separated, and the organic layer was washed with water, dried lo and concentrated in vacuo to yield 7.4 g (96%) of the title compound.
