Procedure

A 1M solution of lithium aluminium hydride in tetrahydrofuran (7.6 ml) was added dropwise to a stirred solution of (RS)-4-methoxycarbonyl-2-(2-phenoxyethyl)piperazine (D9) (1 g, 3.79 mmol) in anhydrous tetrahydrofuran (30 ml) at 0° C. under argon. The resultant mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 0.25 h and at room temperature for a further 1.5 h. Water (1.25 ml), 2N sodium hydroxide (1.55 ml) and water (1.25 ml) were added dropwise sequentially with ice cooling. After 0.2 h sodium sulphate was added, the mixture stirred for 0.2 h and then filtered through a short pad of celite. The filtrate was evaporated in vacuo to give the title compound as a colourless oil (0.73 g, 88%). Mass spectrum (AP+): Found 221 (MH+). C13H20N2O requires 220.
