Procedure

Under nitrogen, stir and cool to 0° C. a solution [(4-chloro-2-cyanophenyl)-(2,2,2-trifluoro-ethanoyl)amino]-acetic acid ethyl ester (93.34 g, 10 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (20 mL) and add, dropwise, a 1M solution of potassium tert-butoxide in tetrahydrofuran (12 mL, 12 mmol). Stir the reaction at ambient temperature for 2 h and then partition between aqueous ammonium chloride/ethyl acetate. Separate the organic layer, dry over MgSO4, filter and concentrate to a solid. Triturate the solid with heptane, filter the solid and air dry to obtain 2.86 g (86%) of the title compound: MS 335(M+H), m.p. 249–251° C.
