Procedure
0.15 g of the 3-hydroxymethylimidazo[5,1-b]thiazole prepared in Preparation 55 was dissolved in 4 ml of dichloromethane, and the solution was stirred. To this was added 0.1 ml of acetic anhydride, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. To the reaction solution was added 5 ml of a saturated aqueous solution of sodium hydrogencarbonate, and the organic layer was separated. The aqueous layer was extracted with dichloromethane (5 ml×2). The combined organic layers were dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure to give 0.181 g (yield 95%) of the title compound.
