Procedure

A mixture of ethyl 1-(4-cyanophenyl)-5-[4-(methylthio)phenyl]pyrazole-3-carboxylate (2.8 g) and 1N sodium hydroxide (10 ml) in ethanol (150 ml) and tetrahydrofuran (20 ml) was stirred at ambient temperature for 3 hours. The solvent was evaporated, and the residue was dissolved in water, acidified with hydrochloric acid, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with water, dried, and evaporated to give 1-(4-cyanophenyl)-5-[4-(methylthio)phenyl]pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid (2.5 g).
