Procedure
First 3,4-dimethoxy-o-phenylene-diacetonitrile (3.7 g, 0.017 mol) is suspended in glacial acetic acid (10 ml) and 30% hydrobromic acid in glacial acetic acid (12 ml) is added at 20° C. Then, the mixture is stirred for 3 hours at ambient temperature. The precipitate obtained is suction filtered, washed with glacial acetic acid and then with acetone/ether and dried. Yield: 5.3 g. Mp: 210°-211° C. (Decomp.)
