2-Hydroxy-5-(1-oxooctadecyl)benzoic acid (1.0 g) was added to 5 ml absolute ethanol, followed by 94 mg of NaBH4. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours, then added to 10 ml of 0.1N HCl to give a solid. The solid was filtered, washed with 10 ml of water, dried in air and then at a pressure of 0.5 mm Hg at room temperature for about 65 hours to give the title compound, m.p. ca. 102° C. ##STR10##
