A mixture of 3.0 g of (-)-cis-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-acetoxy-8-chloro-2,3-dihydro-1,5-benzothiazepin-4(5H)-one, 1.9 g of 2-(N-benzyl-N-methylamino)ethyl chloride.hydrochloride, 3.3 g of potassium carbonate and 80 ml of acetone is refluxed for 20 hours. Insoluble materials are removed by filtration, and the filtrate is evaporated under reduced pressure to remove solvent. The residue is dissolved in ethyl acetate, and the solution is washed with water, dried and evaporated to remove solvent. 2.9 g of (-)-cis-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-acetoxy-5-[2-(N-benzyl-N-methylamino)ethyl]-8-chloro-2,3-dihydro-1,5-benzothiazepin-4(5H)-one are obtained as an oil.
