A suspension of the product from step (b) (39.5 g) in 20% sodium hydroxide solution (140 ml) was heated at 90° for 5 hours. The mixture was cooled and acidified wth dilute hydrochloric acid. The aqueous phase was extracted with ethyl acetate washed with brine, dried, filtered and evaporated to leave a brown oil (33 g) MS; m/e 239.
