A suspension of ethyl 2,4-dinitro-5-chlorophenoxyacetate (2.0 g) and potassium fluoride (0.57 g) in dimethylsulfoxide (10 g) was stirred at a temperature of 90° to 101° C. After cooling, the reaction mixture was diluted with ice water (200 ml) and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with water and saturated sodium chloride solution in order, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated to give ethyl 2,4-dinitro-5-fluorophenoxyacetate (1.7 g; yield, 89.9%). M.P., 59.0°-59.5° C. (recrystallized from methanol).
