Procedure

Reflux 5.0 g (21 mmol) of 3-chloro-N-[2-phenylethyl]butanamide, 3.0 gm (21 mmol) N-ethylheptanamine and 3.0 g (21 mmol) of potassium carbonate in 100 mL of methanol. Follow the progress of the reaction by thin layer chromatography on silica gel. At the completion of the reaction remove the solvent in vacuo and add 100 mL of H2O. Extract the aqueous mixture with 3×100 mL of methylene chloride. Dry the organic extracts over anhydrous sodium sulfate. Remove the drying agent and evaporate the solvent to obtain the title compound.
