Procedure
A mixture of 3-[4-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzoyl]-2-carbomethoxypyridine (1.21 g, 3.94 mmol) in 50 mL of EtOH is treated with 0.22 g (4.33 mmol) of hydrazine monohydrate and heated to reflux for 1 day. The white solid which precipitates from the reaction mixture is filtered and recrystallized from DMF-H2O to give 5-[4-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)phenyl]-8-oxo-7,8-dihydropyrido[2,3-d]pyridazine. M.P. 359°-361° C.
