Phosphorous pentachloride (1.15 mmol) is added to a mixture of diester 2 (1 mmol) in 5 mL of CHCl3. The mixture is heated at 60° C. until 1H NMR of an aliquot shows that no starting material remains (approximately 4 hours). The mixture is cooled to room temperature, and the volatile components are removed in vacuo overnight
