Procedure

A solution of 5.8 g (16.8 mmol) of 5-ethyl-8-fluoro-4-oxo-3-phenyl-3,5-dihydro-4H-pyridazino[4,5-b]indole-1-acetonitrile in 200 ml of a 1/1 mixture of concentrated hydrochloric acid and of glacial acetic acid is heated at reflux for 2 h. The solution is cooled, 100 ml of water are added and the insoluble material is collected by filtration and washed copiously with water and with ether on sintered glass. After drying in an oven, 5.2 g (15 mmol) of a white solid are obtained, which solid is used as is in the following stage.
