Procedure

To a solution of lead tetraacetate (0.73 equiv) in chloroform and dichloroacetic acid was added anisole (1.0 equiv.). The reaction mixture was allowed to stir at room temperature for 90 min. After this period the solution was washed with water and the organic layer was treated with hexane. The product precipitated out and was collected by filtration. The solid was taken up in chloroform and acetic acid. The resultant solution was stirred for 1 h and then washed with water. The later 2 steps were repeated and the chloroform layer was treated with hexane. This mixture was cooled to 2° C. for 24 h. The material that precipitated was collected by filtration and dried under vacuum to afford p-methoxyphenyllead triacetate.
