Reaction Steps

A mixture of 7-methoxy-1-methyltetralin-1-yl-carboxylic acid, methyl ester (0.67 g; 2.9 mmol; from step (ii) above) and KOH (4 g) in EtOH:H2O (1:1; 50 mL) was stirred overnight. The resultant mixture was diluted with water and extracted with ether. The aqueous layer was acidified (HCl) and extracted 3 times with ether. The combined organic layer was washed with water, dried (Na2SO4), and concentrated. Yield 0.58 g (81%).
