1-(Benzyloxycarbonyl)-4-(3-oxo-3-phenylprop-1-enyl)piperidine (0.95 g, 2.7 mmol, from EXAMPLE 154, Step A) was hydrogenated using 5% Pd/C (10 mg) in 95% ethanol (20 mL) at atmospheric pressure. After 3.5 h, the mixture was filtered and the catalyst was washed with 95% ethanol. Evaporation of the filtrate gave 0.95 g of 1-(benzyloxycarbonyl)-4-(3-oxo-3-phenylpropyl)piperidine as a colorless syrup.
