Seven grams of ethyl 1,4-dimethyl-5-(1-methyl-5'-chloropyrrol-2-oyl)pyrrole-2-acetate (0.23 mole) is hydrolyzed with 25 ml 10% NaOH solution at room temperature. After acidifying and extracting with methylene chloride, the crude product is crystallized upon removal of solvent to give 6.1 g (90%) of crystalline 1,4-dimethyl-5-(1-methyl-5'-chloropyrrol-2-oyl)pyrrole-2-acetic acid, m.p. 148°-149° C.
