Procedure
A solution of 36 parts of 2-methyl-1-propyl-1H-benzimidazole-5-methanol in 150 parts of trichloromethane is acidified with an excess of gaseous hydrogen chloride. Then there are added dropwise 32 parts of thionyl chloride. Upon completion, the whole is stirred for one hour at room temperature. The reaction mixture is evaporated and the residue is crystallized from 2-propanone. The product is filtered off, washed with 2-propanone and dried, yielding 40.9 parts of 5-(chloromethyl)-2-methyl-1-propyl-1H-benzimidazole monohydrochloride; m.p. 180° C.
