52 parts of 8-nitro-naphthalene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid are dissolved in 700 parts of absolute ethyl alcohol and the solution is boiled under reflux for 12 hours whilst continuously passing in hydrogen chloride gas. The resulting solution is evaporated in vacuo. The 4-ethoxycarbonyl-8-nitro-naphthalene-1-carboxylic acid of the formula ##STR27## which is obtained in this way, melts at 178° to 180°.
