Procedure

8.5 g (0.04 mole) of bis-(β-cyanoethyl)-phenylphosphine are dissolved in 50 ml of absolute acetonitrile in a nitrogen atmosphere. Then 7.71 g (0.04 mole) of 1-iodo-2-methoxyethane are added and the mixture is refluxed for 12 hours. The solvent is distilled off to yield 13.2 g (82% of theory) of the product in the form of a solid, glassy substance.
