Procedure

A solution of diethyl α-(1-benzyl-1,2-dihydro-2-oxoquinol-4-yl)-α-methylmalonate (3.0g.) in ethanol (20ml.) containing sodium hydroxide (3.0g.) and water (3.0ml.) was heated under reflux for 1 hour. The solution was then cooled and poured into water (200ml.). The resultant solution was acidified to pH 3 by addition of concentrated hydrochloric acid to give α-(1-benzyl-1,2-dihydro-2-oxoquinol-4-yl)propionic acid 1.5g., m.p. 179°-180° C.
