About 150 parts by weight of sodium metasilicate pentahydrate are slowly added to about 75 parts by weight of concentrated sulfuric acid while agitating and keeping the temperature below 100° C. The reaction takes place under ambient pressure; oxygen is evolved and the reaction is complete in 1 or 2 hours, thereby producing a white granular silicic acid compound and sodium sulfate. The mixture is washed with water and filtered to remove the salt and water, thereby recovering the silicic acid compound. The silicic acid compound is air dried at 25° to 75° C.
