Procedure
A solution of benzyl 3-acetylthio-2-isobutylpropionate (588 mg, 2 mmol) in acetic acid (12 ml)-water (1.6 ml) at 0° C. was reacted with gaseous chloride (prealably condensed at −78° C., 1.9 ml). After chlorine had distilled, the solvents are evaporated in vacuo to give crude benzyl 3-chlorosulfonyl-2-isobutylpropionate (630 mg).
