A mixture of 6-(2,6-diethyl-phenyl)-4-ethyl-nicotinic acid methyl ester (2.1 g, 7.1 mmol) and 3-chloroperoxybenzoic acid (77%, 1.9 g) in CH2Cl2 (50 mL) is stirred at room temperature overnight. The mixture is diluted with ether (60 mL) and washed with saturated Na2CO3, then brine, and dried. Concentration at reduced pressure gives 6-(2,6-diethyl-phenyl)-4-ethyl-nicotinic acid methyl ester N-oxide. 1H NMR (CDCl3) 8.89 (s, 1H), 7.26 (t, 1H), 7.19 (m, 3H), 3.95 (s, 3H), 3.02 (q, 2H), 2.04 (m, 2H), 2.30 (m, 2H), 1.26 (t, 3H), 1.11 (t, 6H).
