Procedure
A solution of methyl ester of 2,3-diaminobenzoic acid (4.00 g, 24.07 mmol) and benzaldehyde (2.56 g, 24.07 mmol) in nitrobenzene (60 ml) was stirred at 155-160° C. for 3 hrs. After being cooled to room temperature, the reaction mixture was purified by column chromatography on silica gel (n-hexane/ethyl acetate=20 and 4) to give methyl ester of 2-phenylbenzimidazole-4-carboxylic acid (3.89 g, 64%) as a pale yellow crystals.
