Procedure

To a solution of 4-(1-bromo-1-phenyl-methylene)-piperidine-1-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester (0.742 g, 2.11 mmol), in dry THF (15 mL) at −78° C., was added n-BuLi (1.7 M solution in hexanes, 1.6 mL, 2.72 mmol) dropwise over about 5 min. After stirring the mixture at −78° C. for 20 min, solid I2 (0.729 g, 2.87 mmol) was added and the reaction mixture was allowed to slowly warm to room temperature. The mixture was then quenched with saturated NH4Cl and saturated Na2S2O3, diluted with water and extracted with EtOAc (×3). The combined organic phase was washed (H2O, brine), dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated to give the title compound as a yellow orange solid (0.800 g) which was used in subsequent steps without further purification. An analytical sample was obtained by recrystallization from hexane (5° C.) to afford the pure iodide as a cream coloured powder:
